2020 Oahu, Hawaii Tour

During the 2017/2018 school year, our Trabuco Hills High School Chamber Choir traveled north to San Francisco in April to compete in the WorldStrides Heritage Festival against some of California’s best high school choral ensembles. Their incredible hard work and dedication awarded them a gold ranking of 98/100 and an opportunity to sing in New York City’s Carnegie Hall or compete the following year in one of four Festival of Gold competitions held throughout the country.

For the coming competitive festival season, our Chamber Choir Mustangs will be competing in WorldStrides Festival of Gold held in Nashville, Tennessee amongst the top 10% of the country’s previously years scoring high school choral ensembles. As they prepare an incredibly challenging selection of music, the ensemble will have an opportunity to visit various college campuses to work with well-accomplished professors of choral music, world-renowned composers, explore Nashville’s amazing culture and musical significance, and sing in the amazing acoustics of Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Let’s wish our Mustangs luck as they embark on this once in a lifetime experience to compete and collaborate with some of the country’s best choral musicians.

The idea of going to Trabuco Hills used to be a distant thought in my mind as I had my sights set on going to the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA). I had my heart set on joining the Pianist Program or even the Guitarist Program, but I became hesitant at the last minute. I don’t know what it was that made me change my mind about going to OCSA, but it’s the choice that led me to a family that I love so dearly. It led me to the Trabuco Hills Vocal Department where I have made lasting friendships and have learned so much more about music. This year will be my fourth year in the Vocal Department and my third year in Chamber Choir. I am so proud to be a part of a team full of dedicated musicians that strive to better themselves and others through music. One of my aspirations for all of the singers in the department is that they would all come to appreciate the complexities of the music that they are bringing to life. Music is so much more than just notes on a page. It is the energy and personal flare that each musician brings to the team that really vivifies a piece of music.

A favorite memory of mine in the department is when Chamber Choir was tour in Francisco in 2018 and we were exploring near Fisherman’s Wharf. The group that I was with heard faint singing and we followed the sound to a fudge shop whose employees used singing as a way to attract customers. We quickly made friends with the employees at the shop and we started singing together. None of us could stop ourselves from smiling and I experienced true joy as I witnessed the power of music. I saw first hand that music brings total strangers together like nothing else ever could. There was a sense of unity that I have never felt before. This was the moment that several of us decided that we didn’t care if we placed at all at our festival. What mattered was the relationships that we made with each other during this tour. It was nice to win a big trophy from the festival and get invited to Carnegie Hall, but a lot of us learned that we didn’t need a trophy to feel like winners. To me, that was the greatest lesson that Chamber Choir could have ever learned.

It takes more than correct notes and rhythms to make an outstanding performance. Rather, an ensemble who cares for the well-being of every singer as a family member is untouchable in their ability to create good music.
